In which we take a BIG bite of the Apple ...
We were so excited for William and Claire to experience coming in to the city by water, as we had done a month ago (seems like a million years ago). I'm not sure they shared that enthusiasm, as it required getting up at a 'reasonable hour' (by which I mean before noon). They were a bit cramped in their quarters - Will claims he had to get out of bed to turn over. Lol.
All aboard! ARRRRRR - the motley crew. |
His facial hair gives you great confidence, right?! |
Rick was all in an inexplicable lather about getting to 'Hell Gate' at the exact Greenwich Mean Time hour in order for something something tide blah blah... And we arrived a whole 4.5 minutes later than he had hoped, but Blue Horizon gave everything she had and when we said 'when are we getting to the bad part' he had to, sheepishly, say 'ummm - that was it'. So I guess that went well....?
William took a turn at the helm and Claire water skied behind the boat (just joking).
Brooklyn Bridge Webcam - no really - that is Blue Horizon with crew cruising into NYC |
It was a fun morning and as we dodged ferries, sailboats and sight-seeing cruises we got some good pictures. We think the kids were duly impressed with coming in to NYC by boat… But since they didn't use actual words to tell us, we don't know for sure.
We barely had time to get settled in the marina before we were off to High Tea in NYC. This is a tradition for us, although we usually do it around Christmas, but we wanted to celebrate Claire's coming bday.
Ferry over - the marina is on the Jersey City side because we're not, you know, made of $$$ |
Alice's Tea Cup - I don't know why Will looks so small. Perhaps he drank the potion. |
After tea we walked through Central Park - and then we HIT THE WALL. Looking back through these pictures I realize that we did an awful lot in one day. No wonder we all fell apart at the same time. Suddenly all we wanted to do was be transported to our beds. But there was still a train ride back to Jersey City to check the kids into the Canopy Hotel (adorable). We left William, who was maxed out from a sensory point of view, in the hotel and Claire came back to the boat with us for a bit of dinner and a chat. Later she took an Uber back to join William and we all fell into our beds.
We started out determined to seize the day, but by mid-afternoon the day seems to have got hold of us and was shaking us by the scruff. Or the, pescuezo, as Rick would say. |
I side with Rick on Hell Gate as it has VERY strong currents if you time it wrong!!
