Sat Sept 9: Leland to Franfort

I was up early and prepared for another long cruise.  I cruised about 6 hours yesterday and today was 6.5 to reach Frankfort, but the weather was beautiful, the water calm and the sun warm so off I went.  I had help getting off the dock but it wasn’t too hard given how calm it was.

The entrance to Frankfort on Betsie Lake.

Along this coast of Lake Michigan the state government over the years decided to build multiple marinas within easy cruising distance.  The marinas were made by creating small channels from the lake into coastal lakes.  So there are many small entry canals that lead into well protected lakes with multiple marinas.

I passed the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore cruising down the lake today.  Unfortunately without a car it is not possible to visit, but it looks like a beautiful park to visit.

The weather is getting colder and I think the bugs must sense that it is time to get on with their lives before it gets too cold.  There was some type of hatch over the water and as I cruised to Frankfort the boat was inundated with gnats.  It appeared that there were 4 or 5 types of flying bugs that decided that they needed to shelter on the boat.  I was pretty far off shore so not sure whey they were so far out but the boat was covered in bugs.  Unfortunately I had left the door open and the interior of the boat was swarming with bugs…yech! I got the little vacuum cleaner out and attempted to suck up bugs…

Frankfort has a beautiful beach with nice fine sand.  We are now after Labor Day and the season is over. The town is full of AirBnb’s and small touristy shops many of which now have signs out front saying “Thanks for a great season, See you in 2024”.
