Mon Nov 11 - In which there is no chocolate, but we float in the sky

Charleston – Bass Creek anchorage (river of grass)

JUST ONCE I would like to have time to brush my teeth before we have to start the Bataan Death Sail once again.  I know we must keep to schedule in order to get to Brunswick before we have to leave for Thanksgiving, but REALLY?....

Being on a boat is a great diet.  You can’t bring aboard much because the refrig and cupboards are small.  For that same reason it’s hard to hide chocolate from your husband.  And you can’t get off the boat to go get chocolate.  I think it could be a whole second part of Weight Watcher’s strategy.  However, Rick said there is a marina in Savannah that delivers fresh Krispy Kreme donuts right to your boat in the morning, so I am holding out for that Shangri-La.

The day was, pardon the expression, smooth sailing.  Rick had picked a lovely little anchorage in a tiny river called Bass Creek.  We were all alone with grass wetland as far as the eye could see, in all directions.  We got to watch the sunset sitting on the front of the boat, for about 10 minutes – then the bugs came out and we had to get inside and ‘screen up’.

I know there is bad weather coming (and I know this because of Mr. Weather, who must leave no thoughts of weather unspoken), but right now it is so calm that we can’t tell if the anchor is holding because the boat won’t move.  The sunset was lovely, but let me tell you about the moon rise…

The moon came up full, and even thought it was surrounded by clouds, it could still be seen and made the whole night bright.  The water around us was the darkest black and the moon and clouds were perfectly reflected in it.  After a while you couldn’t tell where sky ended and water began.  Looking down at the water behind the boat it came to seem as though we were floating in sky.  It was one of the most incredible sights of my life, and I feel so privileged to have seen it.  It’s the kind of thing you hope you will never forget… (But since I often lose my phone WHILE TALKING ON IT, I may not be able to hang on to the memory – hence, the blog…)

  1. Is that like not being able to find your glasses while they’re perched atop your head?
