The plan, as I understood it, had been to leave Tadoussac at 2pm. But Capt Rick pulled a fast one on me and so we were up at 6:30am INSTEAD. He decided it would be best to do the morning tide rather than the afternoon one. I hate surprises almost as much as I hate early mornings - so that was AWESOME...
But once I got rid of all the dream debris that bogs me down in the mornings, I could appreciate what an incredible day it was. There was a fall freshness to the air, and the water was calm and smooth. In fact, as we got closer to Cap the water was like glass and we could see whale spouts and lumps from a long way away! The water in the Saguaney, and, therefore, around Tadoussac, is brown with tannin, but near Cap it turns a lovely blue/green.
Little Beluga surfacing - the birds hang around hoping for fish bits, so that is a good way to spot where the whales may be. |
Seal - checking us out. |
Whale tale!!! Belugas don't lift their tails out of the water very often. |
Nice, clear Beluga Lump! |
You know how we all have weird fears that aren't necessarily logical? One of mine was that, if we ventured into whale territory, a whale might breech onto the boat, or kayak. But once we were in the area I just wished a whale would come close enough to do so! Or not.... If the link below works, you can see what that might be like... Yikes.

We got to Cap around 1pm (and, can I just say - I am so impressed with Rick. He had the whole convo with the dock master in French-ish), so there was plenty of time for a nap and a puzzle. Warning - Shameless Product Placement Ahead…… Mike and Linda brought us the cutest gift - a Blue Horizon puzzle!!!! However, Rick only has the band-width for 300-500 pieces while on the boat (something to do with an unfinished puzzle lying around in our tiny space blah blah blah) so we will do it this winter, when we are missing our dear boat.
Thank you, Mike & Linda!! |
We spent an extra day in Cap due to difficult winds making the long haul to QC a misery. (As it turned out, the winds also made our dock a misery - it was bucking and wiggling like a snake caught in a trap). To get away from said dock, we took a walk to the only thing near the marina, a whimsical public garden.
Not sure I've ever seen a barrel-roof church before. |
This is a style referred to as 'esprit de Quebec', Quebec style. |
Mother Nature... |
Idk - forest imp? |
Hah - we saw a penguin! |
The biggest imp of them all! |
Clearly I don't have much to say today - so I'll just finish with a picture that my Other Mother insisted upon. She says there is not enough of me in the blog - I say that is a gift to my readers. But ..... whatever ... This one's for you, Betty Mom!
I hope Capt Rick brings you a cup of tea with wake up calls to accompany bad news about early departures...
