Fri Sept 18: Hanging in Cole's Point

 In which my heart breaks...

Mel here:

I'm freezing - isn't that great?!  We were so hot for so long.  But I WAS sort of hoping for something between too hot and freezing - like some nice sunny fall weather.  Jeez...

We had thought about winter boat storage here at Cole's Point, the price is right. But then we began to wonder how we would get a rental car - it's very isolated.  Rick went to the office to inquire about groceries and/or Uber service, and the marina staff just chuckled.  One guy said 'the closest gas station is a 15 minute drive away, the Food Lion is 30 and Uber....ha! Well there was that one time an Uber came out here.' So that's the answer to that question.  We're not going to winter the boat here!

So we thought we would have big winds in the night, which is why we holed up here, but nothing yet.  It's a sitting around kinda day.  And what do some of us do when we have down time with nothing to do?  Yes, that's right - anything but nothing.  In this case the fuel filter needed to be changed.  No, it really did - old one is black on the left.

Since I'm already busy with work, I don't need to find myself something to do.  Whew!

Late in the evening we take a walk - we try to do at least an hour any time we are on solid ground. The area is, shall we say, unlovely.  The 'road' into the marina is just a long line of derelict boats.  It's like a boat line-up.  Like you would walk the victim down this motley line looking for the perp.

How's this for a literal HOUSE boat!

We keep seeing this sign in the most run down god-awful places.  What is this 'Artisan' Trail Network of which you speak?  If this is part of it we'll be glad to avoid the rest of the trail.

This was my absolute favorite part of walking around in Cole's Point!  I was clapping at a dog running up and down the fence near us, when I was EXTREMELY startled to feel a wet poke from behind in the palm of my hand.  This lovely dog joined us for the whole walk.  She was so well-behaved, never barked, came when called, sat when asked to - and we didn't have to pick up her poop because she WASN'T OUR DOG!  I had worked up a fantasy in my mind where, if she came back to the marina with us, we would keep her.  Sigh...  She left us at the very end of our walk to return home. 😥

Thus concludes our walk of the no-whereville of Cole's Point. I feel like Rick and I could just about write a book called 'Where Not To Go' when cruising.

Rummaging around in the frig I came across this.  What in the heck IS IT and how did it get in our frig.  Rick has some 'splaining to do.

Isn't it fun that, in the middle of nowhere Virginia USA we English speakers can watch a Senegalese movie set in Dakar directed by a French-Senegalese director who became the first black woman to direct a film featured in competition the Cannes Film Festival.  Thank you, Netflix!

And then we received the news that RBG had died and I spent the rest of the night crying... devastated. For me it was the end of the last thing to feel hopeful about. What will I tell my daughter....😭

  2. Pork roll? In Virginia? I thought that was a Jersey thing. I haven't eaten it since I gave up meat 40-some years ago, but remember it growing up. I once lived half-a-block from a small pork roll factory.
I'm enjoying your blog, with a tip of the hat to Jules Verne.

  3. Well...I grew up with Taylor's Ham as a special treat for Sunday breakfast...As I got older, it was not so appealing. But, brother Nick, the nostalgic one, sent a great big roll of it to us as a Christmas present a few years ago. Definitely can live the rest of my life without it. But, my Dad sure loved it & that brings back fond memories!
