Thurs Oct 12 - Tues Oct 17: So. Bored. In Hammond IN

As we sit around worrying about the weather (wind on sat/sun is now a color we’ve never seen before) we are also doing errands. Post office, Walmart and Flu/Covid vaccines — because that’s the kind of fun we bring to the table…

Mostly we are just...see below (thanks for the boat pic, Reader Deb!)

We could take the train in to see Claire, but she's busy and we have lost all will to do anything.  We are hunkered down in our winter gear, and occasionally we turn on the heater. We did go out long enough to notice that the wind had ripped our flexible solar panels off the top of the boat and vanished them. I tell you, the howling of the wind, plus dock creaking, lines groaning, other Loopers complaining grey skies, continual rain - it's enough to make me put the boat broker on speed dial.

I forgot to mention the trains. So. Many. Trains. At ALL hours. Blowing their horns CONSTANTLY.  I rather liked the melancholy of train horns, but after the desensitization training we’ve just gone through I’d be happy never to hear another.

Even the nice sunsets couldn’t cheer us up…

Poor Rick has his own worries.  Due to weather all flotillas got pushed back 3 additional days, so now people are jockeying for position and/or pulling their boats out for storage, or putting them on a trailer (if small enough) and skipping over these pesky locks.  So the flotilla list changes twice a day.  We plan to leave Wed with 16 boats - but it's unclear, at any given time, which 16 boats.  And NOW, due to bad weather anticipated for next weekend, we may be looking at 20 boats per flotilla.

It's a cluster, people....

Here is Rick, trying hard to see the solar eclipse.  We did not have to worry about staring directly into the sun, I'll tell you that for free.

Mon night we had our final flotilla briefing, with Rick as our fearless leader. Here we are relaxing after our meeting:

We are 19 boats now, and Rick turned down all efforts to increase that.  Even so, I expect he won’t sleep until we are through this flotilla bit-Thurs night (and I bet other boats informally join us along the way)…

Rick getting his balls ready-I missed you guys!!

Good night, Hammond and Casino.  We hope never to see you again-nothing personal…

  1. When you’re up against a trouble,
    Meet it squarely, face to face;
    Lift your chin and set your shoulders,
    Plant your feet and take a brace.
    When it’s vain to try to dodge it,
    Do the best that you can do;
    You may fail, but you may conquer,
    See it through!
