We took a nice little hike up to the Foley Mt recreation area today. Remember, these are OLD mountains, so it wasn't like a hike out West. But it was a workout, as we have done no uphills since getting in the boat (other than climbing up to the upper helm about 10K times/day).

We both had to shift into lower gear to get up the hill!

We had a view of the little hamlet of Westport, looking just like a little train board town.
|
This little guy was also up there, for the view I'm sure.

Back in town we continued to support the local economy - in the 2 days of our visit we managed to patronize the local brewery, bakery, general store (twice), grocery store (twice), and the liquor store, in addition to the marina. I'm always thinking about how I can give back, in this second half of my life. I guess this is us giving back???
At the shops we learned that the $1 Canadian coin is called a 'loonie', and the $2 coin is a 'toonie'! Hee Hee

Can you see why it is called a Loonie?! |

This makes the blood of every woman run cold.

Here are some other local things that caught our eyes:

These must be delinquent fish?

Amen! | | | | | |

Huh? |

Fixer-upper boat, if you want to join us on the water

Overall we enjoyed Westport very much. It is certainly one of the more vibrant/active towns we have visited. There were lots of other boats marina (Le Boat, the boat charter service, had 8 different boats in and out durning our two day stay. The visitors must make a significant impact on the local economy) and the walkway/park along the marina was filled with older tourists walking and having picnics. The restaurants were full and the shops seemed to be doing good business.
At dusk we joined our new friends, Yvonne and Michael from Yankee Zulu, on their boat for wine and a discussion of the Canadian Thousand Islands area where we are headed after Kingston. They know it well, and we wanted some thoughts on possible stops. They are good fun, and I hope we see them down the road. Possibly next year, when we start out. I got to have a photo shoot with their old furry Second Mate, Max.

We watched the full moon rise over Big Rideau Lake. It is a beautiful place. |
It seems that a brewery is a good way for a struggling town to attract visitors...same thing in Tupper Lake NY from where my Mom's folks hail. The hardware store sign juxtaposition!!! LOL. I'm fond of a good tart any ol' time!
