Sat June 18: Stuck in Clayton

Yup-it was a bouncy night.  We knew we were safe, tied up to the dock, but it was a rough ride.  The worst part was the noise - a constant cacophony of creaking lines, groaning docks, splashing & churning waves.  The ear plugs helped a bit...

I guess we are not immune to weather-related issues (poor peeps with 100+ temps); although it is early in the season for them here.  But I guess that is the nature of the new normal - expect the unexpected. There is too much water in the Trent Severn Locks, so the boats that we have been traveling with, who all intended to go that direction this week, are trying to figure out where to kill time.  The wind is too high for us to leave the dock today, so we can't go north yet.  The good news is that we can go see Paula Poundstone tonight at the Clayton Opera House!!

We had a nice long walk today - we, finally, don't feel so Covid-tired.  It was a pretty day, just windy.

On our way back into town the rails-to-trails path took us by one of the THREE storage warehouses the Antique Boat Museum uses.  I have to admit I wasn't so interested in the museum - but the storage space was an AWESOME spectacle, just jam-packed with interesting craft of all kinds!

Look how the top is a clear derivative of a horse-drawn vehicle.

And What The Heck?!  This is a pontoon plane attached to a submarine?... Rick says it was used as a simulator to practice pontoon landing.

Racing boat - both the engines and design taken from airplanes.

Racks of more cool stuff in the back.

Naptha engine - early internal combustion engine.

Gorgeous old racing boat.  I'm getting a very early-James-Bond kinda vibe.  As he comes into Venice or something..

I like the juxtaposition of the old bark canoe and the newer Chris-Craft.

In the afternoon we did a puzzle, and then got ready for our date with Paula at the Clayton Opera House.  And WHAT A DATE IT WAS!!!  Apparently she is known for never doing the same act twice, because she does a lot of 'crowd work' where she asks questions and then reacts to the answers.  I will never be able to explain how it happened, or do it justice, but she and Rick had the best time bantering, and they brought the house down.  I think it might be one of the top 10 moments of Rick's life!!  It certainly involved far more hilarity and spotlight than our wedding... It was worth being stuck in Clayton to have this once-in-a-lifetime moment!

  1. Forget the boats! Rick and Paula! And no video?!? Holy cow, I could have aired it at the next board meeting. Seriously, would have loved to have seen it.
