Wed Sept 22-Thurs Sept 23: Seneca Falls Redux

In which we attempt to solve the Rubix Cube that is laundry…

The plan was to stay just one day in Seneca Falls but the weather report called for a couple days of rain so, since it is FREE, we decided to extend our stay and wait for better weather.  With the extra time we decide (resigned ourselves?) to do some house keeping and laundry.   Rick cleaned the outside of the boat and Melanie cleaned the inside.  Needless to say it was a really fun day!  We also took advantage of the laundry facilities in the Seneca Falls welcome center and did almost all of our laundry.  We have yet to figure out how we can get ALL our clothes washed as we are always wearing something.  We have thought about putting all are clothes in the laundry and wearing just a towel, but then realized that we need to wash the towel too.  We’ve not yet figured out how to wash all our clothing!

Wednesday afternoon we took a nice walk through the part of Seneca Falls we had not seen and discovered some great old houses and the cute old train station that looks to be in the process of restoration.  We awoke Thursday to the promised rain and spent the morning reading and drinking coffee/tea.  It was a relaxing morning and we enjoyed our rainy treat from Mother Nature, only hoping that it didn’t rain so much that they had to once again close the canal/locks due to too much water (Rick always has to be anxious about something).

In the afternoon we went into the small Seneca Falls museum where we were treated to multiple displays on the past glory of this canal town.  Early on Seneca Falls used water wheels to power all kinds of mills - weaving mills, grain mills, metal foundries/tool making mills and many other types of industry.  The town is famous for pumps, woven cloth, finished clothing (well know for excellent socks!) and wooden rulers in addition to the previously discussed women’s rights movement….I think the ruler thing is cool, but probably the women’s rights movement is more important overall!
