Sun June 6: Manasquan to Great Kills Yacht Club

In which we appreciate the shit out of the good ...

We left Manasquan as early as possible because we needed to catch the out-going tide - and get the hell outta there.  Our plan had been to make it to the anchorage at the Statue of Liberty, but we decided to follow Meander to the Great Kills Yacht Club in order to work on the generator issue, and save my marriage.

We let loose the lines a little before 7am and, again, battled all the boats headed out to fish.

Behind Meander, waiting for the railway bridge to go up.  That was another great source of noise during the night.

At  one point we counted at least 13 other boats vying for space to get out.

The trip up the last piece of NJ coast was uneventful except that at one point we saw some hills and got very excited.  The coast all the way from Florida has been very flat. You don’t think about it, but all the land that meets the ocean is low and mostly flat.  So when we came to Atlantic Highlands, NJ we were pretty excited to see hills - probably no higher than 500 feet, but still much higher than we had seen during all our travels along the coast.

A great shot of Blue Horizon, taken by our new French Canadian friends on Libertad.

I'm so glad we made this choice, as we fell in love with the gentle little harbor.  Loopers are invited to use the GKYC thanks to looper John who keeps his boat there.  This is a great win-win-win, as loopers have access to a private club and lovely harbor, the yacht club gets extra money for upkeep and John stays busy and social!  Compared to last night this was luxury - with electricity, bathrooms and groceries nearby.

GKYC is on Staten Island, just south of NY.  We could see Manhattan in the haze as we entered into the marina.  John, the harbor host, offered to lend us his car to go grocery shopping and I jumped at the chance, accompanied by Lynn and Carolyn.  Later, somewhat fresh from a nap, Melanie and I walked to the CVS to fill some prescriptions.

If you read the sign you will see that I am breaking all the rules here on SI!

Mel felt so refreshed and inspired that she used the items in our 'baking cupboard' to make protein bites!

After taco salad shared with 'two of our favorite Lynns' (as Mel says), Lynn loaned me his trickle charger for the generator battery, and we all crossed our fingers.

Featured Boat Name (right in front of us) - this is great because the last name of the boat owner is Boyle:
